Wellness in Movement

Three individuals are seated on large drums, playing music together in a room with various equipment and supplies in the background.
Two young boys are smiling and laughing while playing on a blue playground structure.
Three people, two adults and one child, are exploring a lush, forested area with fallen trees and dense vegetation in the background.
A group of people are climbing up a sandy hill against a backdrop of a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

At Metropolitan Schoolhouse, movement is not a standalone program but a core part of our educational philosophy. We recognize that physical activity supports focus, confidence, and emotional well-being, and we intentionally integrate movement into the rhythm of each day. Students spend time outdoors daily, engaging with their environment in ways that encourage exploration, play, and connection.

Our approach emphasizes a wide and evolving range of movement experiences that shift from unit to unit. Students may engage in martial arts such as Jujitsu, participate in culturally grounded dance instruction and global music and rhythm explorations, or take part in recreational activities like mini golf and roller skating. By rotating these offerings, students are continually introduced to new ways of moving, expressing themselves, and connecting physical activity to broader cultural and interdisciplinary learning.

Through these experiences, students develop tools to regulate their bodies and emotions, especially in challenging situations, while also building the capacity for back-and-forth, collaborative interactions. As a result, students often leave these activities smiling, more in tune with their minds, bodies, and emotions, and ready to engage with the rest of their day.
